Please use ept, and let me have your comments. Has ept (Excel Portfolio Tracker) helped you? How do you use ept? What have you done to make ept more suitable for your use? What could Selact Publishing do to make ept more useful for you?
It is important to keep track of how you are doing, what your equity curve looks like. It is important to keep track of what is working and of what is not. It is important to keep track of what is causing strategies to fail. The more accounts you maintain and the more equities you are holding at any time the more you need a tracking system.
There are many ways to keep track. Online brokers provide some portfolio tracking capabilities. A few web sites have portfolio-tracking modules. There are commercial and shareware programs that keep track for you. Over the years, I've tried a few including Microsoft Money and Quicken. The program I stuck with the longest was MSN Moneycentral Portfolio. I still use it for paper-trading. Moneycentral is easy to use and powerful, but I have had some problems with MSN availability and with reconciliations. Recently I started using Stator, more below.
While using other programs, I often supplemented my routine tracking with Excel spreadsheets to capture certain aspects of my trading. Finally, I pulled the plug on other tracking systems and built an Excel workbook to track my portfolios. This switch to Excel is greatly facilitated by MSN Stock Quote Functions. Stock prices, 20-minute delay, can update you portfolio equity anytime. If you like Excel, and know or want to know VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), please consider using Excel to track your trading. Using Excel has the following advantages:
- You build it so you understand how it works.
- You build it so it fits your needs.
- Data is open so you can modify anything.
- The portfolio-tracking workbook can link to other Excel workbooks.
- The portfolio-tracking workbook can evolve with your needs.
- Code developed for special situations is easily integrated into your routine tracking.
- Output summaries, reports, and graphics are limited only by your imagination.
- Current prices, 20-minute delayed, are easily updated.
Stator
Recently I started using Stator. The free ept is limited by its freeness. Stator has much more capability.

Stator is a serious tool for serious traders, with a significant wow factor built in. The first time the equity curve built on screen I was hooked. As I continued using Stator to track my systems and found a lot more beyond slick graphs.
Stator minimizes input and maximizes output. Input screens are cleanly designed and easy to use. The inputs for trades, dividends, deposits and withdraws are easy to find and easy to use. The closed trade and open position import tools are a big help in putting Stator to work quickly. There is a rich assortment of outputs for each system. The Statistics tab opens three new tabs: Trade Based, System Based and Income Based. Trade based compares winning trades to losing trades, giving statistics for counts, runs, days in trade, profit, size and costs. System Based provides system wide statistics including duration, trade distribution, drawdown, annual return and Sharpe Ratio. Income Based summarizes total closed profit and dividends received. The performance tab accesses equity curves and trade profit histograms. The graphs are visually appealing, fun to watch as they build, and very useful.
Stator is built on systems and accounts. More than one system can be linked to an account. This is a breakthrough for me as I had given up multiple system accounts as a paperwork nightmare. Without Stator each system had its own account and cash balance. Stator's capability of multiple systems in a single account makes a more efficient use capital possible.
The pieces of Stator are well done. However the package, everything working together is what sets it apart. Consolidations of systems to see totals are automatic and sub-consolidations can be set for custom views. The multiple owner capability can be used when managing money for others or to paper trade a proposed strategy. Stator provides investor/traders with the tools to stay on track.
